You know one of the best way to take care of ourselves is by really taking a close look at what we eat at every meal. Now I was at a grocery store last week and I was on a mission.

I’ve been reading about dangerous food additives and I wanted to find out as much as I could to see what was right here in my neighborhood, in my local store.

And you would not believe what I found.

You wouldn’t believe this! Okay.

Now I do want you to know that I am kind of a science geek. I’m doing this reading for you. I have been reading food labels since I was a teenager.

And I can tell you I have tried to avoid food additives for many years. I’m an exceptionally healthy person at the age of 67. And I hope you’re on the path to being one or that you are an exceptionally healthy person now too.

And you could stay that way or get that way if you clean up your diet and be sure that you’re avoiding these 3 food additives that are dangerous. So you know you need to read.

You get much smarter about your food choices when you read everything.

Anything that’s in a box or a package or a bottle, you have to read.

So I was in the grocery store, I’ve been reading about food labels, I’ve been reading about food additives and I wanted to see what was in my local store.

I went to the cereal aisle and I started pulling off boxes and looking at the side or the back of the box to see what was in it. And I found one of these 3 dangerous food additives in almost all every single box.

You know, you can walk 30-feet down the aisle and there are dozens and dozens of brands from General Mills and Kellogg’ and every other big manufacturer.

And all of them with their bright packaging and very attractive words and things on the front to get you to pay attention contain the first dangerous food additive.

And that is BHT.

Now, what does that stand for? BHT is butylated hydroxytoluene. You don’t need to know that. It’s commonly used to prevent oxidation – that means spoilage – in a wide variety of foods. And oh, by the way, cosmetics, ladies.

It’s also in those. It’s listed as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen. That means it causes cancer. They learn that from doing research and it shouldn’t be allowed to enter the environment. It can cause liver damage. It’s harmful to sea life.

If you’re like me shopping in a hurry kind of sometimes, you just want to get a familiar brand and get out of the way, get the shopping done.

But that’s what I’m saying don’t do, take more time, check the side or back of the package and see if it has BHT. If it does, avoid it. I’ve found only three brands in my own grocery store that did not have BHT in it.

And they were Nature’s Path, Barbara’s and Canadian Farm. There are other brands too in different parts of the country. Take just plain oatmeal, for example. If you want to have cereal, that is a plain, clean, simple choice with one ingredient in it – oats. Okay?

So if you want to find these simple, clean, plain things, you have to go to the end of the aisle and look for them because they are not going to be at the front or the middle or eye level.

They’re usually down low on the shelf because they don’t sell the most. And the grocery stores know that where your eyes go first, that’s what you’re most likely to buy.

And millions and millions and millions of people are buying these – what I call contaminated foods – cereals. Okay.
